Dale Earnhardt Jr. is a t-shirt and jeans kind of guy.
The look goes with his genuine and laid back personality, and for years, if fans weren’t seeing him in jeans, he was wearing a fire suit. That was part of the job.
But now that Junior retired and transitioned from NASCAR driver to broadcaster, we’re seeing a different (and exciting) side of him. Monday night, he made his debut on NBC’s NASCAR America, and while he offered solid analysis, the real treat was his suit.
With a couple exceptions, the only other time fans would see Earnhardt in a suit is at the NASCAR Awards at the end of the season. But his look on NASCAR America had a little more pizzazz than something traditional.
Dark blue plaid with subtle white lines, this felt like Junior was utilizing his style to show off a lesser-known fashionable side of his personality. His suit was fun and different – especially with him sandwiched between his former crew chief Steve Letarte and Leigh Diffey, who were both wearing plain blue suits – without approaching outrageous.
Then there was his tie. Red with while polka dots definitely added some extra flair to Earnhardt’s look. And while plaid and polka dots of any kind don’t always pair well together, Dale Jr. made it work.
Prior to Monday, Earnhardt made his first appearance this year on NBC during the Super Bowl pregame show and followed it up by reporting from the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. But for much of those segments, he was either bundled up because of frigid temperatures or in NBC apparel.
So this is the first time we’ve seen Junior really dressed up on TV since officially making the jump to broadcasting.
NBC said it hired Earnhardt to be himself as a NASCAR analyst and broadcaster – he’ll be in the booth when NBC takes over the Cup Series schedule in July – so maybe his plaid suit is a hint at what’s to come fashion wise from the retired driver.
We can only hope.
