Lonzo Ball continued to wear Nike as designer teased new BBB shoes

Lakers point guard Lonzo Ball appeared in Los Angeles’ final two preseason games, and as we saw last year, his footwear choice again raised eyebrows.

In both Lakers preseason matchups with the Warriors, Ball took the court wearing Nike Kobe AD sneakers. He has yet to wear his signature Big Baller Brand shoes with the Lakers since the end of last season. Even at Lakers media day, Lonzo opted to wear LaMelo Ball’s shoes rather than his own. He practiced in Nike sneakers.

Yet, this likely doesn’t signal a move away from Big Baller Brand for Lonzo. Earlier this week, Brand Black founder and designer David Raysse posted a look at Lonzo’s upcoming signature shoe for Big Baller Brand on Instagram.

He wrote:

Zo’s next shoe will be dropping at BBB in the very near future, I’m very proud of the next series of Big Baller shoes, I think people are going to be very surprised….in a good way

While Lonzo’s reluctance to wear his own $500 BBB shoes could seem like an indictment of Big Baller Brand’s quality, LaVar Ball previously claimed that Lonzo wore other stars’ signature shoes out of spite to competing brands.

He said in July of last year:

“It’s making a statement to the brands of what they could have had with an open mind. The players are the brand ambassadors. The brand is nothing without the players.”

LaVar’s spin aside, there’s little benefit for Lonzo or Big Baller Brand for him to be wearing Nike shoes for free. If Lonzo opts to wear Nike out of performance concerns, then he should work out an actual endorsement deal with Nike. Plus, for a player coming off his first injury-plagued season, it would have made sense for Big Baller Brand to have Lonzo test the shoe in game action before the regular season.

That obviously can’t happen now.

The Lakers open their season on Thursday in Portland. We’ll have to see what shoe Lonzo goes with when the games count.
